Banneker Memorial Group Commemorates Ten Year Anniversary With Who’s Who Salute to Dr. Dorothy Height.

 

Washington, DC, – The Washington Interdependence Council kicked of it tenth year to commemorate the legacy of colonial American hero, Benjamin Banneker, with A Who’s Who Saluteto Dr. Dorothy Height, a living icon and Chair Emerita of the National Council of Negro Women. The event was held, February 24, 2006 at The Jefferson Hotel, WDC. Celebrity entertainment provided by Jazz legend Mr. Ron Holloway and renowned singing phenomenon, Ms. Tata Vega, of Color Purple fame. A host of surprise entertainment and other living legend social, civic and political luminaries were on there to fete Dr. Height for her legendary civic service.


The special event was Co-Chaired by former Secretary of Labor, The Hon. Alexis Herman; DC Mayor, The Hon. Anthony Williams; and Black Leadership Forum President, Dr. Joe Leonard. Members of the Executive Committee for event include notable luminaries such as Dr. Lonnie Bunch, Founding President of the Nat’l Museum of African-Amer. Hist. ; MD Congressman, The Hon. Elijah Cummings; National Museum of American History Director, Dr. Brent Glass; Leadership on Civil Rights Director, Mr. Wade Henderson, Esq.; AfriCare Founder, Dr. C. Payne Lucas; SCLC Co-Founders, Rev. Joseph Lowery; Rev. Walter Fauntroy, Dr. E. Faye Williams, Esq.; Natl' Chair NCBW, The Hon. Andrew Young et al. renowned leaders.

Celebrating America’s Grande Dame Matriarchs: A Who’s Who Salute to Dr. Dorothy Height was the theme of the event, and paid homage to the more than 70 years of service

Dr. Height has tendered to America and Africa in helping to ameliorate undesirable social conditions and overall social and civic injustice. Dr. Height rose to international prominence in the 1960’s as she stood shoulder to shoulder with 1963 March on Washington Big Six civil rights leaders – A. Phillip Randolph; Roy Wilkins; James Farmer; John Lewis; Whitney Young and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Perhaps her crowning long term achievement was leading the National Council of Negro Women in securing ownership of the only Black-owned building on Pennsylvania Ave., a historic mansion with a long legacy of historic record; the Founding of the Black Family Reunion held annually on the Mall, and the Mary McLeod Bethune Memorial on Capitol Hill, the only memorial built to an African-American in the nation’s capitol. Dr. Height is a Congressional Gold Medal and Medal of Freedom honoree among others.
